Current Swell, a band based in Victoria BC, is in the foreground of the “new roots” music front pushing out of Canada’s west coast. The band has been around for a few years getting their early recognition around the world as a mainstay in the “surf rock” community. Their sound continues to develop into a blues and roots feel, gaining even more popularity with their fans while sharing stages with bands such as Xavier Rudd, The Beautiful Girls, Bedouin Soundclash, the Beach Boys and many others.
As the band progressed through 3 full length albums and multiple national tours they gained international attention. “The online community has always backed us and is a big reason for our success”, said Lang, of their iTunes, YouTube popularity. The bands newest album, “Protect Your Own”, produced by Todd Simko (producer of Xavier Rudd’s, Food in the Belly) is a slight departure from the direction of some of their other albums but has been well received none the less. Being a new addition to Canada’s Fontana North label and Japan’s Surf Rock Records is a testament to the bands growing momentum. “We believe in what a band stands for, the instruments we hold, our voices, a real song and a good time” said one band member. Solid song writing and musicianship are always backed by a solid groove, and that is distinctly “Current Swell”.
Playing bigger venues and festivals has taken the band to a new level in the past year. Not only larger audiences, but a larger “Swell”, with western Canadian fans being treated to a sometimes 6 piece band. “Kiltlifter” Dave, on the trombone has been making the rounds on stage, as well as “Ghosty” who joined after the Swell’s long time bass player Louis, moved along. Scott Stanton and Dave Lang are both on guitars while Chris Petersen has the beat locked down on drums. “Sometimes you just wanna jam with all your friends at once and it’s great we get a chance to do that sometimes” said Stanton. “Getting to jam with someone you look up to, is even better” he said of the bands recent touring schedule with Australia’s “Ash Grunwald”. Fans would often get to see everyone trading solo’s and banging their heads to some bluesy mash up and loving it all the way through.

Spring is here, and what better time to have west coast indie favs, Brasstronaut, on the road. Beginning May 29th in Victoria, Brasstronaut will be embarking on a 17 date Canadian tour in support of their new album, Mean Sun, out next month on Unfamiliar Records. Their second full-length was recorded with Juno Award winning producer Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Dan Mangan, Cave Singers) etc.), and will have an early fall release overseas.
Accompanying Brasstronaut on this cross-Canada tour is Icelandic band Útidúr (pronounced: ooh – detour), a ten piece group from Iceland that plays joyous and ambitious chamber-pop with a dramatic streak. Although this charismatic crew is quite (midnight) sunny in attitude they also know their way through darker waters. Trace elements of Angelo Badalamenti, Beirut, Calexico and Ennio Morricone can be found in their system so fans of these should expose themselves to Útidúr in any way they deem appropriate.
Formed by guitarist/singer Gunnar Örn and keyboardist Kristinn Roach, Útidúr started churning out multifaceted songwriting that soon chain-reacted the project to mushroom into a ten strong bunch. The full posse now includes players of double bass, drums, trumpet, violins, a second guitar and an accordion. The band has honed their craft for a while and began playing at various venues in downtown Reykjavík in late summer of 2009.
Útidúr’s debut album ‘This Mess We’ve Made’ is out now and was recorded at the Sigur Rós recording studio ‘Sundlaugin’ in the summer of 2010. The album is big in sound, featuring over 20 musicians, and you can expect a spacious blend of bipolar drama and sofa-sinking mellowness, all soaked in hook-laden pop sensibility.

High Talent, Depth of Perception, Soulful and Heartfelt. These are just some of the elements that make up this cutting edge Canadian musical force. FIELDS OF GREEN are on the cusp of world-wide recognition. A musical journey that started just four years ago, and one that promises to be with us for decades to come.
FIELDS OF GREEN began in 2008, and although young, this band belies their age in musical maturity. The four determined musicians hail from the vibrant beach town of Kelowna, British Columbia. Kyle Tubbs (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Kevin Dreger (Keyboards/Bass/Vocals), Connor Tkach (Guitar/Bass/Vocals), and Johnny Jansen (Drums/Vocals), make up this wondrous musical entity. All in their early twenties, the group displays unending measures of energy and creativity while displaying a musical maturity that ranks up there in the most seasoned of Rock Artists. In their creative space, they can meld various influences seamlessly, creating a familiar, yet unique sound that will fast become the FIELDS OF GREEN signature.
Multi-talented, all, FIELDS OF GREEN have met with one success after another. Their first album, “Blanktown” is consistent in its display of rich and varied musical tapestries. It won Rock Recording of The Year from the BC Interior Music Awards of 2011. They were also involved in the professional musical competition the “Peak Performance Project 2011”, making the Top 20 in that event. 2011 and 2012 have seen this group busy with writing and recording their new “Self-Titled” album. The group has joined forces with Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Biffy Clyro, Hedley) and Paul Boechler, whom is producing and engineering what will be the band’s second full length record. No doubt, what we are about to hear will be deeper, richer tapestries that will land straight in our hearts!
Cruel Young Heart, hailing from Vancouver, BC was officially formed in February 2010, and has recently come out of the legendary Mushroom Studio with their self titled EP. This project is written and produced by singer James Blackmon, engineered and produced by Chris Michel and mixed by Mushrooms legendary Rob Darch who has worked with artists such as Tom Cochrane, Bif Naked, and Delerium. Cruel Young Heart’s sharp and catchy songs this band is ready to emerge as a group on the fast track to success.
Born out of Vancouver’s coffee scene, Mercy Yearsis a collaboration from parts of British Columbia, the Canadian Prairies and London, England. Euphoric melodies and driving rhythms reflect their expansive origins; hints of the UK post-punk scene are melded with Cascadian indie-rock textures resulting in a stirring wall of sound. They’ve spent the last eight months developing their local reputation and playing venues including the Biltmore Cabaret, the Railway Club, the Yale Hotel and the Cobalt. Enlisting the help of old friend/new producer Cam Tatham, they have recently finished recording their debut EP at Tugboat Place, the personal studio of one time indie pioneer Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat). Set to be released on their own label at the end of April and with a tour of western Canada taking place in May, the band has enlisted the help of Laura Genschorek on keyboards and vocals to help them realize the in-studio additions to their songs. The ball is well and truly rolling.
Nuuka’s aim is to provide a soundtrack for that road trip, dance party, walk in the sun, sleepless night, airport layover, Vancouver City bus ride, and, all the better in person, live show! Known as Indie/Pop/Rockers with strong melodies, catchy hooks and harmonies, Nuuka will have your ears and maybe even your hands and feet.

Transit is an indie hip hop artist who moved to Calgary from Victoria a few years ago to pursue an education and to take his music to the next level in the rapidly expanding indie community of Calgary. Since arriving in Calgary, Transit has wasted no time making himself a household name. In the short amount of time Transit has spent on the Calgary scene he has created a movement of people who are sick of Calgary being labelled as strictly a “Country Music City.”
This past year, Transit and long time collaborator Dave Wallace created a video titled “Creating a hit: The 8 Hour Challenge.” In the video, Transit and Dave film themselves creating a top 40 pop song from scratch to prove how easy it is to be “radio friendly.” After creating the viral Youtube video, Transit and Dave were approached by KISS star Gene Simmons who was interested in the same sound that Transit and Dave were mocking. Rather than pursuing Gene’s invitation to set up a showcase for his record label, Transit decided to stay independent in order to maintain his artistic integrity.
Transit has been featured on major publications such as Macleans Magazine, CBC The National, Global National and Q With Jian Ghomeshi.

At 23, Eamon McGrath has a list of accomplishments under his belt that would echo that of a writer twice his age: 250+ songs written and recorded, album of the year credits, multiple tours through the UK, Canada and Europe, and stints playing in the backing bands for both the legendary Daniel Johnston and Julie Doiron.
McGrath’s style is constantly changing and his shows range from sweaty, bombastic, punk and noisy garage-rock inspired barnburners, to quiet, intimate country best fit for a Western saloon. In the span of a single concert, and sometimes in the span of a song, heart-wrenching confessional lyrics pave the highway towards string-shredding guitar solos and an adolescent howl like no other.
“Young Canadians” takes his classic country/punk live show dichotomy even further. It’s dark, yet, beautiful with badass, 90s-era pacific northwest workouts like “Rabid Dog” and “Saskatoon, SK” lying next to the dirty soul in “Pain of Love” and quiet, haunting odes to time lost (”Auditorium”), all filtered through a youthful, fist-in-the-air nod to Canadiana.
“Young Canadians” is McGrath’s 3rd official release following “13 Songs of Whiskey and Light” (2009), and “Peace Maker” (2010). For Young Canadians, McGrath headed back into Vancouver’s JC/DC Studios with John Collins (New Pornographers) and Dave Carswell (Destroyer) and recorded it all within the span of one wild week.
It’s a grand novel bridging gaps between McGrath’s Albertan, prairie roots, and the ever-present spirit of punk rock that has come to define his life. McGrath sums up “Young Canadians” on the first track: ”My life could be a broken record by Canada’s Ramones. Eternal adolescents: I’m calling out your names. Rock and roll won’t ever be the same”.
“The teenage kick in his raw Saturday night energy is even more authentically prodigious…his rasping Waitsian voice suggests an unlived lifetime spent in low company in smoke-filled bars. (4 stars)”
– Uncut Magazine
