An Immersive World of Sound Created From the Personal Memories of the Audience…

Skin And Bones Music Series and The Alternator are very proud to present the incredible talents of media and sound artist Miles Thorogood and guitar soundsmith David B. Geraghty.

This performance is the seventh installment of the Skin And Bones Music Series, a new concert series devoted to the presentation of experimental music in the Okanagan.

Sound artist Miles Thorogood combines electronics and traditional media to create sound installation pieces. Using computer coding, algorithm design, and artificial intelligence, Miles will perform “Auditory Memories” – a work that is based on “earwitness” accounts. During the performance audience members will be invited to contribute short written texts of their own personal memories that will be inputted into the unfolding soundscape, creating a unique and evocative listening experience.

David B. Geraghty performs what he calls “abstract maximalism.” With little more than an electric guitar and a laptop Geraghty generates droning sonic tapestries that are both tranquil and haunting.

Admission is $10 for the public and $8 for students and Alternator members. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at the Alternator. Non-members also have the option to purchase tickets at Milkcrate Records on Ellis Street.

Miles Thorogood is a practicing media and sound artist who combines algorithm modelling, artificial intelligence, and electronic sound design. His works have been included as part of the Vancouver Olympics, Nuit Blanche in Toronto, the International Symposium of Electronic Arts, and the Vancouver PUSH festival. Miles references the natural environment and human produced systems as the point of departure for his technology based works. Specifically, he has been modelling human perception to develop algorithms for automating the tasks in sound design practice, toward the goal of computer-assisted creative systems. In his own words, Miles describes what his piece “Auditory Memories” entails:

“Auditory Memories” addresses concepts of memory and place by generating soundscape representations of texts, or earwitness accounts. “Auditory Memories” is based upon the Audio Metaphor System, which uses text analysis, information retrieval, and techniques from artificial intelligence to autonomously generate a unique soundscape from a short text.

We ask the audience to share simply written memories of places with particular emotional flavours such as a dream, or dread, or peace. A text-analysis of these memories reveals to the system sound describing words and calculates the emotional weight of the text. The semantic information is used to retrieve multiple sound files from an extensive database of soundscape recordings… The generated soundscape evokes a listener’s memories and associates of imagined environments.

Miles is an honors graduate from The Australian National University, Centre for Art and Technology, has studied at both Emily Carr and Simon Fraser Universities in Vancouver, and currently teaches at UBC Okanagan.

Kelowna based David B. Geraghty is a guitarist who fabricates drone based pieces using guitar, homemade electronics, and a computer. Geraghty layers sound upon sound to create intricately rich sonic realms and textures that paradoxically convey both motion and stillness. Evocative of the work of Brian Eno or Phill Niblock, David creates the perfect backdrop to accompany one’s own reveries.
