MAJOR MOTION PICTURE
The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre proudly presents Major Motion Picture on Friday September 30 2016 at 7:30pm. Major Motion Picture is the first show of 2016/2017 Dance Series.
Out Innerspace Dance Theatre is a Vancouver based company dedicated to furthering the development and appreciation of contemporary dance in Canada through the creation of innovative and integral dance works. Vernon is the first stop on Out Innerspace’s fall tour.
Major Motion Picture explores timely cultural themes of surveillance, territory, propaganda and belief through eccentric and lawless characters.
7 dancers fight for the theatre, losing and gaining the grounds for their power, identity and desire.
Two populations emerge, The Insiders and The Others while one character, The Representative manufactures conflict and information. Out Innerspace recognizes the importance of challenging our preconceptions of what can be expected, experienced and expounded in contemporary dance
The performance includes infrared technology and an on-stage surveillance system alongside Out Innerspace’s trailblazing movement invention. The innovative choreography is set to the music of Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Pulse Percussion Ensemble, Vanalles, Young Gutted and an original composition by Belgian producer Tristan Vloeberghs.
“Unlike anything you’ve ever seen…suffice it to say you’ve never seen movement like this, or characters like this, on a dance stage before.” (Janet Smith, Georgia Straight).
Last January the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre hosted Out Innerspace for a technical residency to incorporate lights and projection into their show. The Company also participated in The Performing Arts Centres’ Community Outreach program and Workshop for dance/drama students and a private show for workshop attendees and dance subscription ticket holders.
Being avid dance educators, Artistic Directors David Raymond and Tiffany Tregarthen will arrive in Vernon a week prior to the show for a week of outreach, enthusiastically engaging all levels of dance experience with a deep interest in discovery and play. They incorporate their own dance making methods and repertoire with an aim to translate them into universal and personal approaches for the participants to experiment with their own dance impulses.
“The dancing is athletic, satisfying and accomplished… This is bold and exciting contemporary dance.” – Times Colonist.
The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre thanks the following sponsors for their generous support: The Vernon Morning Star, the Okanagan Advertiser, the British Columbia Arts Council, the North Okanagan Regional District and the Government of Canada.
