Mama Kin will be bringing The Magician’s Daughter to Canada for the first time this summer with dates across the width of the country including July 12th Evolve Festival, Nova Scotia; July 14th Ottawa Bluesfest; July 16th The Dakota Tavern, Toronto; July 17-19th Vancouver Folk Festival; July 23rd– 26th Calgary Folk Festival.
Part raconteur and all-out entertainer, Mama Kin has been nominated for ARIA and AIR awards in her native Australia. To get a taster of what to expect on the tour, Mama Kin teamed up with Ambiguous Fiddle Media to record an intimate live performance of the latest track to be taken from her album-‘The Magicians’ Daughter’– ‘One Too Many’- shot in the famous De Barras Folk Club, Clonakilty, Ireland during Mama Kin’s last European tour.
It’s been four years since Mama Kin’s last Canadian tour dates. Back in 2011 she supported her husband John Butler (John Butler Trio) on his sold out tour including dates at the Sound Academy, Toronto and a “Guerrilla Busk” in Confederation Park, Ottawa when a storm forced the cancellation of their Ottawa Blues fest show.
A renowned live performer Mama Kin has shared stages nationally and internationally with the likes of Ani di Franco, John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire and The Waifs. Both her club and festival shows have earned her accolades at home and abroad receiving both Irish Times Gig of the Week and Port Ferry Folk Festival Artist of the Year on her most recent European and Australian tour dates.
Her latest record, ‘The Magician’s Daughter’s’ reveals an assuredness and potency that has come to define Mama Kin. Created at the junction where strength meets vulnerability, Mama Kin’s music oozes soulfulness. Unafraid to mine the depths of the human condition, Mama Kin taps raw emotions and, fears, pushing the boundaries of self-expressions and realization.
As the youngest of six children, born into a family of Maltese extraction, her childhood was immersed in music. But it is her mother, an actual magician’s daughter, for whom the album is named. Mama Kin’s grandfather worked as a professional magician in post WWII Malta and her mother, Iris, was one of his assistants. “She was and still is engaged in the alchemy of performance, the importance that people believe, that they are left wondering if perhaps magic really does exist.”
