Festival History

The BC Interior Jazz Festival began 38 years ago under the direction of the late Johnny Deschner, Robin Jarman and Dr. Doug Graham. The first festival was half a day in duration, then grew to a day and a half, next to two full days. Approximately sixteen years ago, the Festival became a three day event, when vocal jazz was added.

The BC Interior Jazz Festival is organized and operated by volunteers and has extraordinary community support. We have been privileged by the long-term relationship of such corporate sponsors as School District #23, Wentworth Music, Paramount Music, MusicFest Canada, Q-103.1/Power 104fm, Yamaha Canada, Okanagan Tree Fruit Cooperative, Kelownaevents.info, eVent! and the Daily Courier.

The Michael Garding Big Band

Style is what this band is really all about. The Big Band era goes back to the 1930’s and 1940’s. This was a time when North America was coming out of the depression and was ready to have a good time. Big Bands would travel around the country filling ballrooms and dance halls. This happy, upbeat music got people out of their chairs and up on the dance floor. The infectious rhythms and sentimental lyrics became more and more popular with the arrival of the Second World War. Guys and gals jumped at the opportunity to get dressed up and have a “night on the town”. In the last few years, there has been a resurgence of interest in this type of music. People are again “ready to have a good time.” Ballroom dancing has become extremely popular not only as a recreation, but as a competitive sport. Swing dancing has once again swept the nation. Even contemporary artists such as Colin James have caught on. The “Little Big Band” was a huge success.

This takes things to the next level; this is a true Big Band. Right down to the signs in front, the Michael Garding Big Band holds to the tradition that made this style so popular. Crisply dressed musicians with an ocean of shiny brass deliver big sound with the power only a Big Band can. Whether you want to dance or sit back and watch, The Michael Garding Big Band puts on a show you won’t soon forget.
