The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and The Hare
The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre Society proudly presents The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare on Saturday, November 23rd at 11:00am at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre.
Performing in venues around the world to great success, Lightwire Theatre produces spectacular visuals using cutting edge technology, moving sculpture and dance in an unforgettable theatrical experience. After receiving the prestigious Jim Henson Foundation Grant and reaching the semifinals on the hit TV show America’s Got Talent in 2012, this innovative company comes to Vernon on November 23rd to bring new life to two favourite tales: The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare.
The show’s four performers arrive onstage in complete darkness, leaving only Lightwire Theatre’s striking electroluminescent puppets visible to the audience. “We are able to erase the dancers” says Lightwire Theatre’s Eleanor Carney. “What you see onstage is just the puppet. It’s a glow in the dark adventure that combines dance, puppetry and technology.”
The two tales Lightwire Theatre is prepared to perform will delight children and parents alike: Hans Christian Andersen’s classic The Ugly Duckling has helped generations of children understand humanity’s universal struggle for acceptance. Meanwhile, Aesop’s fable The Tortoise and the Hare, now more than 2,500 years old, continues to drive home the time-tested adage, “Slow and steady wins the race.”
With dazzling visuals, poignant choreography and creative use of music ranging from classical to jazz to pop, The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare is a performance that is thoroughly entertaining and easy to enjoy.
The Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre would like to thank the following sponsors for their generous support: TD, Kal Tire, Capri Insurance, Allan Francis Pringle LLP, Silver Star Mountain Resort, Planet Clean, Pacific Inn & Suites, the Vernon Morning Star, the Okanagan Advertiser, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and the Regional District of the North Okanagan.

… Fresh on the heels of their break out success, the creators of Darwin the Dinosaur are at it again! In an age when television, computers and video games reign supreme, the folks at Light Wire Theater (in conjunction with Corbian Visual Arts and Dance) bring their use of cutting edge technology, moving sculpture, and dance to another unforgettable theatrical experience.
Beginning in January 2012, The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare will follow in Darwin’s footsteps through the use of Corbian’s signature electroluminescent puppetry.
