September 28 to November 24, 2013
The Kelowna Art Gallery and local artists’ group Art Brew have partnered to present Saturday Morning Cartoons, an exhibition that takes a nostalgic look at the bygone era of old-school television cartoons.
Do you remember waking up early on Saturday mornings, quietly preparing a bowl of sugar-laced cereal, and sitting in front of the television for hours upon end of back-to-back cartoons? Thirty-two local artists do …
Saturday Morning Cartoons presents work that ranges from classical animation drawing to digital media to sculpture. These works explore the weird and wonderful subculture surrounding their favorite Saturday-morning cartoons and cartoon characters.
Jessika von Innerebner, a member of Art Brew and part of the team behind last year’s Pixel Culture, which featured art inspired by retro video games, says, “We are so excited to have this exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery. The work in this show is just so fun. Visitors will love it. Plus, it gives Kelowna’s vibrant tech/digital art community an important opportunity to share their work with Kelowna audiences.”
“With works that reference Charlie Brown to Scooby-doo and everything in between, the kids visiting the Gallery this fall as part of our school tours program are going to have so much fun looking at and talking about his exhibition,” says Renee Burgess, Head of Public Programming at the Gallery.
An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation.
An evening of Quick Talks on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 7 pm, will be held at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Augusto Kapronczai, Director at Bardell Studios, and Charity Gerbrandt, Principal Creative of Club Penguin, are two of four guests who will each speak for ten minutes on the intersection of art and technology in their practices, and the future of art in a digital world. This event is free and open to the public.
On Friday, October 25, 2013, join us for a Halloween GO Party! entitled ALIENS and ‘80s, presented in partnership with Disney Interactive. This fundraiser’s theme has been inspired in part by Saturday Morning Cartoons, which will be on view for guests attending. ALIENS and ‘80s is a ticketed event for ages 19+.
The Kelowna Art Gallery would like to acknowledge the generous support of Yeti Farm Creative, Central Okanagan Foundation, and Disney Interactive for Saturday Morning Cartoons.
Saturday Morning Cartoons will be on view from September 28 to November 24, 2013.
The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com.
