The Society’s 2013/14 Dance series kicks off with Southern California based Backhausdance on Saturday, September 28th at 8:00pm.Whether under a canopy of illuminated bulbs or moving through a sea of thousands of red balls, these eight dancers from Southern California demonstrate ferocious athleticism in two contemporary dance pieces.
On Sunday, November 3rd at 7:30pm, Alberta Ballet (Joni Mitchell’s Fiddle and the Drum) return to the Performing Arts Centre with their production Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, bringing to life the music and poetry of Sarah McLachlan. With the stunning choreography of Jean Grand-Maître and danced by the full company of 32 exquisite dancers, this piece explores the ever-changing lives of women – their struggles, their relationships and their triumphs.
The Dance series continues in 2014 on Tuesday, February 4th at 8:00pm with Ballet Jörgen’s full length, full company adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, which masterfully transforms Shakespeare’s tale of love, anguish and revenge into the magical world of ballet. Reminiscent of their incredible 2013 performance of Swan Lake, Ballet Jörgen remains true to the original story while creating a clear and emotionally driven journey into this timeless classic.
Ballet Kelowna returns to the Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, March 1st at 8:00pm, launching its second decade with a ground-breaking program featuring Canadian choreographers and composers. From pioneering works to a cutting-edge jazz commission, Innovation will challenge ideas of contemporary dance.
