Douglas Walker touring exhibition on view at Kelowna Art Gallery

Douglas Walker: Other Worlds
July 6 to September 29, 2013

Kelowna, BC: Visitors to the Kelowna Art Gallery this summer will be captivated by an enormous 80-foot-long blue-and-white painting focusing on a whale by Toronto-based artist, Douglas Walker.

For his show Other Worlds, Walker has created a giant work that will completely fill the east wall of our Treadgold / Bullock Gallery space. Created using the artist’s hallmark blue and white, it is a stunning work of art featuring a depiction of a whale in the centre, a planet at the left, and a mask/face at the right. It has been painted on sheets of paper, formed into modular units that are installed butting together to make up the three huge images. This exhibition truly needs to be viewed in person to gain an appreciation for the scope of the work.

Douglas Walker: Other Worlds and its accompanying catalogue have been produced in partnership with the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, Ontario, and the Dalhousie Art Gallery, Dalhousie University in Halifax. It is co-curated by Peter Dykhuis (at Dalhousie) and by independent Ontario-based curator, Corrina Ghaznavi.

Douglas Walker was born in Brockville, Ontario, and studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. He has exhibited at ICA in London, UK, the Dia Foundation in New York, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Power Plant, and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, in Toronto. Walker has been the focus of a travelling mid-career retrospective show organized by the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon, and an overview of his career was featured at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery in 2001.

The opening event for Douglas Walker: Other Worlds is scheduled for Friday, July 5, 2013, from 7 to 10 pm at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This opening event coincides with the Gallery’s fundraising event, GO Party! 7: The Party Aquatic. Tickets must be purchased for the evening, and full information is available on the Gallery’s website.
