The Hats’ 2013 season opener, The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn debuts on the Cannery Stage February 7. The Gin Game will be directed by Vernon’s Monty Hughes who directed ‘Lost in Yonkers’ in the 2012 season.

Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, two residents in a home for senior citizens, strike up an acquaintance. As they seem to enjoy each other’s company Weller offers to teach Fonsia how to play gin rummy and they begin playing a series of games that Fonsia always wins. Weller’s inability to win a single hand becomes increasingly frustrating to him, while Fonsia becomes increasingly confident.

While playing their games of gin, they engage in lengthy conversations about their families and their lives. Gradually, each conversation becomes a battle, much like the ongoing games. The card games are a metaphor for life and there’s plenty of wit, humor and truth in what has become a modern classic of the American stage.

The Gin Game was an immediate success when it opened on Broadway in 1977. The premiere was directed by Mike Nichols and starred Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.

The Gin Game opens on the Cannery Stage in the Cannery Trade Centre 1475 Fairview Road Penticton on February 7 and runs until March 2. Showtimes are: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8:00PM and Sunday at 2:00PM. There will be a reception opening night in the adjoining Opus Bistro which will give everyone a chance to meet and chat with the cast and crew.
