The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art welcomes Jordan Bennett as he presents aboDIGITAL – an exhibition of new work curated by Heather Igloliorte, on show at The Alternator from June 15 to July 28, 2012.

In aboDIGITAL, Mi’kmaw artist Jordan Bennett examines the interface of audio-visual technologies and the internet with his First Nations heritage. Bennett’s art deftly blends such seemingly disparate elements as Mi’kmaq worldview, hip hop culture, ceremonial practice and graffiti aesthetics, creating dynamic works that express the fluidity, vitality and continuity of Aboriginal cultures in the present. His works participate in the critical formation of a cross-disciplinary, multi-media, new visual language in contemporary Indigenous art.

Jordan Bennett is a multi-disciplinary visual artist of Mi’kmaw descent who lives on the west coast of Newfoundland when he’s not crisscrossing the country for exhibitions, projects and artist residencies. Bennett’s works have been featured in Problem Child (The Rooms, Newfoundland, 2011), Decolonize Me (Ottawa Art Gallery, 2011), Beat Nation: Hip-Hop as Indigenous Culture (Vancouver Art Gallery, 2012) and the forthcoming Changing Hands: Art Without Reservation 3 (Museum of Art and Design, New York, 2012).   He was also one of four artists to participate in the 2011 performance art series Acting Out, at artist-run centre Modern Fuel, in Kingston, Ontario. He was recently honoured with the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council’s Emerging Artist of the Year Award for 2012. aboDIGITAL: New Works by Jordan Bennett is his first solo show.

The public is invited to attend on June 15, 2012 at 7pm for an opening reception and artist talk.
